Must be familiar with Chinese liturgical music and speak, read, and write in English and Mandarin Chinese fluently.br br Business necessity for Chinese language requirement and familiarity with Chinese liturgical music The Chinese requirement is based on our business necessity and is essential for the employee to perform the required duties. As a Chinese American Christian Church, our Music Director is responsible for conducting Christian music for predominantly Chinese speaking congregation including lyrics in Chinese. Over 80 of our congregation is Chinese and more than 65 of those are unable to speak any English or speak limited English. The Music Directors job is important as worship through music is a vital component of a church service. Music enriches the worship experience and helps the congregation learn, pray, grow, and connect with God and our church better. The presence of Chinese cultural expression is important as people worship best in the language that they can understand and with songs they know, so the Music Director needs to teach and reinforce this expression of worship. Forming a church culture that is appealing to these members is vital for the churchs survival. It makes these members feel welcomed and helps in retaining members in our church.br br The Music Directors inability to speak, read and write Chinese fluently would affect our church service and the congregation turnout. Church members will leave and move to another church if they are faced with linguistic difficulty and cannot attend the worship effectively. In order to effectively lead and communicate with the Chinese speaking congregation and musical groups, the Music Director must communicate in a language that they understand. Like a vast majority of churches, our income comes from donations weekly offerings from those who attend our worship service. Less members attending our church services means less money. The Music Director must be fluent in Chinese to meet the linguistic and religious cultural music needs of church members. Without fluency in the Chinese language, the Music Director will not be able to make musical selections and prepare musical programs in Chinese that are suitable for our congregational singing and religious services Sunday services, holidays, festivals, special events, etc., transcribe compositions and arrangements for Chinese music, translate English worship songs, or distinguish whether the lyrics being translated into Chinese match with the original foreign melody song lyrics are projected in Chinese and English during combined service so that all can understand and follow along with the song. Without the ability to speak, read and write in Chinese, the Music Director will not be able to interpret hymn text and song lyrics accurately as Chinese worship songs use more idioms specific to the Chinese culture and the textual content within hymnody is practically impossible to understand unless you are fluent in the Chinese language. Without understanding the lyrics, the Music Director will not be able to effectively lead the choir who are all Chinese through rehearsals and services and coach them to give the right emotional delivery for each worship song. Heshe will also not be able to teach and organize music for our Chinese worship teams after Sunday service and bible study groups during the week to improve their singing and music selection.br br The Music Director must also be familiar with Chinese liturgical music church music to plan Christian musical programs that are culturally and linguistically appropriate for the church community that we serve.
