Specific Skills

At the time of application, applicants must either hold a Ph.D. or equivalent international degree or be enrolled in a Ph.D. or equivalent international degreegranting program. While the area of specialization is open, the Department strongly values interdisciplinary and theoretical approaches that address the centrality and intersectionality of racism in American politics. Applicants should demonstrate evidence of a strong humanistic research agenda and excellent scholarly potential in areas that complement existing strengths in the Department, as well as an ability and willingness to teach a wide range of courses at the graduate and undergraduate levels, to mentor graduate students in the Ph.D. program, and to participate in departmental and campus life. Applicants whose research and teaching are centered in the rhetoric of political theory, critical theory, and race in the US are strongly encouraged to apply. The Department welcomes applicants with specializations in such areas as Black, Latinx, and Native American political thought; and critical raceindigeneity approaches to American politics. All additional specializations are welcome, including those whose scholarship address questions of democracy, citizenship, environment and land, violence, slavery, colonial settlement and extermination, immigration, poverty, law, civil rights, and gender and sexuality; the history, culture, and politics of contemporary struggles for racial justice; and comparative perspectives. The Department is interested in candidates who are committed to advancing equity and inclusion through their research, teaching, mentorship, and service.
