Specific Skills

Two years of postsecondary education in music or a related subject is required. In addition, some experience repairing flutes valued at 10,000 or more is required, along with some experience repairing both pinned and pinless flute mechanisms. Certification of Accomplishment as a Straubinger Certified Pad Technician to purchase and install Straubinger pads on flutes is required, as is competency as a flutist for testing instruments. There is no specific minimum employment experience time required, but experience with specific repair skills and tasks is needed. The employer is NOT requiring an Associate Degree in Music or any other specific post secondary degree or diploma, however, there is no way to specify this on the form. The employer is requiring only 2 years of postsecondary education in music which could include individual coursework not culminating in a degree or diploma, attendance at a repair school, or technical school, Certification in musical instrument repair obtained through a collegetechnical school, or apprenticeship and work experience sufficient to obtain similar knowledge. Please note the employer will accept any suitable combination of education, training or experience for this position. Instrument repair jobs can take a day, a week or a month, depending upon the repair. It is difficult to standardize and quantify and verify the time needed to gain the experience required, just as it is difficult to quantify the specific education needed. There are few repair schools in the US. The Repair Technician MUST have experience performing certain repair tasks in order to adequately perform the job duties, but whether the Technician has completed those tasks in days, months or years, is not relevant for this type of job.
