Specific Skills
Position requires a PhD in a life sciences field at least 5 years of experience as a Bioinformatics Scientist, Bioinformatics Analyst or similar position in the genomics industry; and or experience must include Experience with genomic analysis including BWA, genome analysis toolkit GATK, samtools, picard tools, bcftools, or de novo assembly; Experience in the cellfree DNA industry; Familiarity with public genomic datasets including TCGA, dbSNP, clinvar, or COSMIC; Experience implementing and validating with CLIAvalidated production pipelines; Extensive experience running wet lab genomic experiments; Experience with cloud data platforms such as Databricks, Azure or AWS; Experience with data analysis tools such as hierarchical clustering, regression, PCA analytics, and advanced visualization; and Proficiency in Python.br br ADDL RESPONSE TO H.12. DOL classified the Staff Bioinformatics Scientist SBS position as 191029.01, Bioinformatics Scientists, which has a Job Zone 5 SVP range of 8.0 and above, for which a graduate degree or higher plus 5 years of work experience is the normal minimum requirement for entry into the field. Thus, Kariuss requirement of a PhD in a life sciences field is not necessarily normal for a Bioinformatics Scientists position, but is required to ensure that the SBS is proficient in formulating novel hypotheses and designing experiments to validate or refute such hypotheses. SBS at Karius must be able to formulate hypotheses based on current understanding of microbial cell free DNA and design and execute computational and wet lab experiments to test these hypotheses, with the goal that these hypotheses may develop into commercial products after rigorous testing, time intensive analysis, and thorough validation.br br Several of Kariuss additional experience, knowledge skills requirements for SBS role are core to the tasksknowledge listed in ONET are normal for a Bioinformatics Scientist position. Additionally, its a business necessity for SBS to have experience in the cellfree DNA industry because Karius focuses on a critical subset of plasma blood cell free DNA derived primarily from microbes living within the human body. Its also critical that SBS at Karius has experience implementing and validating CLIAvalidated production pipelines because Karius runs a CLIAcertified laboratory and outputs of this laboratory require a CLIAvalidated production pipeline. The Clinical Laboratory Improvement Amendments CLIA Program strictly regulates labs testing of human specimens and ensures they provide accurate, reliable, and timely patient test results no matter where the test is done. httpswww.cdc.govcliaindex.html.br br A wet lab is one where drugs, chemicals and other types of biological matter can be analyzed and tested by using various liquids. SBS at Karius must have extensive experience running wet lab genomic experiments to ensure the SBS has a deep appreciation of how their data for analysis is derived, and understanding of the nuances to specific genomics techniques and limitations regarding conclusions that can be drawn from such experiments. Moreover, the nature of the Karius Test and underlying core technology requires the ability to analyze large amounts of microbial genomic data and derive meaning. Analytical tools used by SBS include various forms of clustering, regression analysis, and principal component analysis. SBS must be able to implement and enhance these algorithms. SBS must also have experience with advanced visualization tools to summarize and communicate complex findings to internal stakeholders.
