The Structural Engineering position requires a Ph.D. in engineering and a minimum of two 2 years of experience in bridge design, specifically heavily skewed structures and related force effects. A minimum of 12 years of experience with MicroStation, MIDAS, and MDX is required. Additional experience using Ultra High Performance Concrete is a plus, but not required. Any suitable combination of education, training andor experience is acceptable.br br NOTE STATEMENT REGARDING BUSINESS NECESSITYbr br Our need for a qualified engineer to design bridges with heavy skews requires an individual with a level of theoretical understanding and experience that is not common for this position. We encounter bridges with heavy skews fairly frequently in our state. The key function of this position is understanding the unusual force effects that arise from such construction. Any person with a civil engineering degree with structural emphasis or a structural engineering degree should be trainable to design structures of this nature.br br The issue with this type of training is the time it takes to gain the knowledge with on the job training as opposed to someone who gained this conceptual knowledge not only through experience, but the diligent emphasis on theory that is required through higher education. Basically, it would take a candidate with no formal education on force effects in highly skewed bridges with adjacent beams at least five 5 years to fully understand what a candidate with a doctorate on the subject matter has on day one of employment. With the current workload and industry pressure we face, our company cannot reasonably invest 5 or more years of training into this position.br br The force effects in the acute corners of highly skewed bridges are very complex. If the force effects are not understood and accounted for, the best case scenario is a structure that is very difficult to build and does not perform satisfactorily. At worst, the result could be an end product that is not serviceable at all without contemplating a brand new structure. Based on our experience and estimation, the level of analytical knowledge and skill it takes to successfully complete a PhD program would require at least five 5 years of on the job training. This is because the time spent pursuing the PhD are completely focused on the specific subject area at issue, while in a practical training approach, a candidate would be unable to do so because they would inevitably have to apply their time and effort on multiple subject areas in the course of a typical work day.br br The requirements for our Structural Engineering position are not typical for this type of occupation. Nonetheless, they are reasonably related to this role in our company and are necessary to perform this job in a reasonably sufficient manner given what is required of this position. These heightened qualifications are a business necessity for our company because of the nature of the work we pursue. We are constantly undertaking bridge projects with heavy skews and other uncharacteristic design patterns. However, our company is a small firm, and we dont have the luxury of a large pool of engineers with this type of expertise or a pool of suitable candidates given our states decreasing population. We need advanced expertise with these particular designs on our team. This will allow our company to better meet the needs of our state Department of Transportation as we work to repair, rehabilitate and replace our infrastructure.br br s W.
